For Our Animal Friends

The fun of summer can turn to tragedy if proper caution is not exerted by pet owners. Our pets are extremely vulnerable to the hot weather, so we must take extra care in watching out for them!

Always provide fresh water.

Always provide shade throughout the entire day.

Always provide adequate ventilation to provide good air circulation in the summer.

Never leave canned pet food outside as the heat will quickly spoil canned food. If you must leave your pet's food out, be sure it's dry so Fido or Kitty doesn't become sick.

Always keep your pet well-groomed. Mark Nample, DVM & Karen Yates, DMV recommend that shaving your pets coat can make you pets more comfortable. This especially true for breeds that have heavy or long coats. Make sure that if your dog has light-colored skin that you leave the hair at least inch long to help protect against sunburn. Comb him to remove excess undercoat. Clean coat also helps prevent summer skin problems.

Never leave your pet in a parked car. .

Always keep a current license and I.D.

Always exercise your pet in the cool of the day - early morning or late in the afternoon or early in the evening.

Never let your dog walk on hot pavement which can burn paw pads.

Never go on vacation and leave your pet in an empty house or tied up outside. Be sure to provide for his care and comfort when you plan a summer trip.

Cats, dogs, birds and rabbits cannot sweat! Protect your pets from heat exhaustion or heat stroke. It can cause illness or brain damage. Signs of heatstroke are: rapid shallow breathing, rapid heartbeat, very high body temperature, vomiting, collapse, and eventually, coma. Rabbits, cats, dogs, birds all need to be kept as cool as possible during the summer. Place the well-ventilated dog house or rabbit hutch in a breezy, shaded area. When it gets over 85 degrees, fill a two-liter soda bottle with water and freeze it (do not fill to the top so that there is room for expansion). Place the frozen bottle in the cage or somewhere that they can lay next to the bottle or play with the bottle. Always have extra soda bottles filled with water and frozen in the freezer. Plan ahead so you will have enough bottles when you need them for your animals.

If, in spite of your care, the dog days of summer bring on twitching, rapid panting, barking, a wild "staring" expression, or a bluish-purple tongue, immerse the pet immediately in cold water or spray with the hose on the stomach, head, and groin. Let him lick an ice cube or ice cream but do not allow him to drink unlimited amounts of water. Then call your vet. Quick cooling may save your pet from death by heatstroke.

Never walk your pet in an area that you suspect has been sprayed by insecticides and other chemicals. Dog poisoning, in particular, always increases considerably during the summer, when gardens, lawns, and trees are usually sprayed to control weeds, insects, and pests. Many of these chemicals can sicken or even kill animals, so keep your pet away from these areas.

Always watch out for fleas and ticks that may infest your pet. Take him to the vet for a thorough summer check-up and use a good flea and tick repellent as recommended by your vet.

Please leave your animals at home where they are content & secure.

THE LATEST SPA TREATMENT: FISH PEDICURES

Ready for the latest in spa pampering? Get set to dunk your feet in a tank of water and let tiny carp nibble away.

Fish pedicures are big hit in the D.C. area… a spa there has been offering the fish treatments for the past four months, and the spa owners said that 5,000 people have taken the plunge so far.

The spa owner said customers are hooked. A first time customer who let the toothless fish go to work on her feet said, "It kind of feels like your foot is asleep."

The treatment costs $35 for 15 minutes and $50 for 30 minutes. The spa has more than 1,000 fish, with about 100 in each individual pedicure tank at any given time. The spa owner said he’s looking into creating a full-body fish treatment.

Speaking of "The Life Aquatic" -

Beaches all over the world - from the US Gulf Coast to France have been dealing with some unwelcome creatures earlier in the year than ever before - JELLYFISH!

The anxiety of vacationers is forcing some tourism-dependent cities to take defensive measures. Several municipalities have prohibited swimming when the glob-to-human ratio gets too high.

Global warming is being blamed for the increase in jellyfish. When the temperature in the water changes by even a degree, it increases the population.

Even though jellyfish stings don't match shark attacks as a threat to human life - they still hurt like H-E-double hockey sticks (LL).

ENVIRONMENTALISTS LOOKING TO PHASE OUT BOTTLED WATER

Bottled water might be a thing of the past if environmentalists have their way.

The green movement is trying to phase out bottled water, saying that the environmental waste of discarded bottles is getting to be a big burden.

Some cities are already following suit, like Chicago, which has added an extra tax to bottled water to discourage its purchase.

And last month the U.S. Conference of Mayors voted to ban bottled water from City Halls across the country, except in emergencies.

STUDENTS GETTING PAID FOR "A"s?

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is considering signing a state bill to allow and encourage school districts to give rewards to middle and high school students for doing well on standardized tests.

Passing out rewards for students doing well in school is catching on in some schools in New York City where some elementary kids are given $50 for doing well on tests. Some parents say they support the idea of rewarding kids so they learn hard work can pay off, but other parents say giving students money for good grades may send the wrong message.

So What Do You Think?

Miami Bound?  Get That "Beach Body" Ready!

A full-blown image of YOU — private parts and all — could soon be visible to a security officer, on-screen, at the airport.

Miami International Airport is one of a dozen airports nationwide that have begun pilot-testing whole-body imaging machines. The gadgets reveal weapons and explosives concealed under layers of clothing.

At least for now, the TSA is using ''continuous, random selection'' to choose passengers for the machines, and it is optional. Travelers who decline will be physically patted down. All passengers must still go through metal detectors.

POWER NAPS MIGHT MAKE YOU A POWER PLAYER

Research shows that a 20 minute nap in the afternoon may be just what the doctor ordered to recharge your battery and increase your productivity for the rest of the day.

(Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison were all champion power nappers.)

Studies also show that power naps may improve heart function, lift your mood, and improve memory among other things.

Some tips for power napping include scheduling your nap after lunch, be consistent, and eat foods high in calcium and protein an hour or two before nap time to make you more sleepy.

CART "WASH"-- FOR THE WAR ON GERMS

The owners of a Washington supermarket have installed the area's first full-scale shopping cart wash.

It is a push-through device that sprays a peroxide solution over each cart between every use. It dries in a few seconds, leaving behind a cart that is reportedly 99.9 percent germ-free for the next customer.

The store owners at the Chevy Chase Supermarket decided to install the cleaning machine because of all the recent media reports about dirty carts that carry the same amount of germs as a public toilet seat.

More Starbuck's Drama

Starbucks baristas at the Mall of America location walked off the job and handed a letter to management demanding “just treatment” of all employees affected by Starbucks' store closures nationwide.

The baristas demanded a severance package for affected workers plus the option to transfer to other Starbucks stores. The walkout comes days after Starbucks has announced plans to close 600 stores nationwide.

You Might Wanna Recycle Last Year's Jeans -

A new survey says that back-to-school duds and supplies will be at the bottom of many family shopping lists this fall-- with 71% saying they will spend less on back-to-school items this year than last.

83% of those surveyed said they will cut back on clothes spending, nearly half say they will spend less on shoes, and about one in three will spend less on backpacks.

Lots more also plan to do back-to-school shopping at dollar stores instead of department stores and office supply stores.

Most of the people who responded blamed rising food and gas cost for the cut backs, along with a falling stock market and declining home values.
